1) Vert Vs. Street: Vert and street are the two main different styles of skateboarding. Vert skateboarding is when a skateboarders uses a half pipe to perform there tricks. Street skateboarding requires nothing but a flat surface to skateboard on, but objects like rails, tables, and ramps can be used to preform a trick. Street skateboarding is popular then vert skateboarding. Partly because vert skateboarding requires you to be at a half pipe.
2) Basics: Once you decided what style you want to skate its time for you to learn some basic tricks. These tricks will lay a foundation for harder more advanced trick you'll want to learn in the future. Some of these tricks include the ollie (the basic jump of skateboarding), manual, pop shuvit, and 180's. Once you have learned these tricks you will have a good foundation for future more advanced tricks.

3) Spin / Flip: Once you are comfortable with the basic tricks mentioned above it is time to move to the next level and learn some spin and flips tricks. Spin tricks add a nice style to your skating and some tricks to learn include a big spin, 360, and 360 shuvit. Flip tricks look really cool and are sure to impress a viewer; some tricks include kickflip ( basic flip trick), 360 flips, variels, and 180 flips. There are many more spin/flip tricks but learning some of these will give you a good introduction of these kinds of tricks.
4) Grinds: Grinds are a nice change up to skateboarding and can be very fun to do. A grind is when a skateboarder uses his trucks or his wooden part of his board to slide on a surface such hand rails and ledges. Some basic grind to learn are the 50-50, boardslide, and krooked grind.
